WHAT IS TN?
The TN program is a nonimmigrant foreign visa program available to U.S. employers seeking to hire qualified citizens of Canada or Mexico for approved professional job categories. With few exceptions, most eligible job categories require a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. It is often regarded as a cap-less alternative to the H-1B visa program.
TN status may be obtained in-country through a petition filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) (i.e., changing status to TN from another nonimmigrant classification), or out-of-country through a U.S. consulate or embassy. Canadian TN applicants may also obtain their status from a port of entry (e.g. international airport).
